Between January-March 2022 SCA supported low income and vulnerable individuals and households to access food support and financial help in paying their energy, water and other essential bills. The majority of these households were non-English-speaking, possibly unemployed and many were feeling the continuing isolation after lockdown, often with ill health.
Our food supplies were purchased from local retail shops and Western International Market and then packed and distributed each week, working with the Southall Food Hub and Dormers Wells Junior School to target the most needy residents. We assessed participant need by checking whether households received DWP benefits, housing benefit, council tax rebate or were unemployed and by March we had helped over 200 households with food and direct payments.
